So far, the case was progressing at a decent pace. What had Vogel concerned was that everyone was cooperating fully. It suggested he wasn’t remotely close to finding the killer. If this ‘A’ person didn’t pan out, then they’d be back to square one, and he still had no clue who the third person might be, beyond the fact that it couldn’t be ‘A’ if the descriptions were accurate. And it might still be a red herring.

“Did you find my Annie’s killer?” asked Dettman as he and his wife entered the drawing room where they had been shown after their arrival.

Vogel bowed his head. “Not yet, sir, however the case is progressing. A person of interest has come to our attention that you might be able to help us with.”

“Of course.” Dettman motioned for them to sit. Vogel waited for Johanna to sit as Stadler parked by the window, staring outside.

“Who is this person of interest?”

“We believe he’s a friend of your daughter’s, though not from Berlin. We believe she knew him from Munich.”

They both exchanged glances with each other, glances that were more than just curious surprise. “Oh. Why would you think that?” asked Johanna.

“There was a party six months ago at Dieter Maier’s house, and your daughter was there. While at that party, she met a man and spoke to him at length. We found her diary in her locker at work and—”

Johanna Dettman inhaled noticeably.

Vogel paused. “Is there a problem, ma’am?”

She quickly shook her head. “No, no, it was just that I didn’t know she kept a diary at work.”

Vogel noted the specific words used. “But you were aware she kept a diary?”

Again, she shook her head. “No, no, I wasn’t, though I suppose most young girls do.”

“The diary we found was full. Its last entry was dated about a week ago, and she seemed to write in it nearly every day, which would suggest there’s another diary out there. Is it all right if my partner searches your daughter’s room for it while we speak?”

Johanna’s eyes widened. “Oh, I don’t think that would be—”

Her husband cut her off. “Absolutely. Do whatever needs to be done.”

“But those are her private things!”

“She’s dead now. If there’s a diary in her bedroom that could point to who her killer is, I want it found.”

His wife’s shoulders slumped. “Yes, I suppose you’re right.”

Dettman rang the bell and Heidi promptly appeared.

“Show the detective to Annie’s room. Answer any questions he might have.”

“Yes, sir.”

Stadler followed Heidi, closing the door behind him.

“So, I take it there was something in her diary of significance?” asked Dettman.

“Yes, there’s reference to the young man she met at the party.”

“What’s his name?”

“We don’t know. She referred to him merely by the letter A.”

“A? That could mean anything.”

“Yes, sir, it could be an initial for his first name, his last name, or it could merely have been chosen as it is the first letter of the alphabet, though I believe it to represent the young man’s first name.
